A Sandy Springs neighborhood experienced heightened tension Monday after a domestic dispute led to an extensive police search. The Sandy Springs Police Department took an armed man into custody following a manhunt that lasted approximately two hours. Officers initially responded to a domestic call at a home along Dumaine Trace at around 2 p.m., as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Upon arrival, police encountered the man brandishing a weapon. He disregarded commands to drop the gun and instead fled, discarding some clothing in the process. A search involving K-9s and additional police officers ensued, focusing on the area near Spalding Drive and Trowbridge Road. This prompted a "shelter in place" advisory for those living nearby. Eventually, the man was found in a wooded area, though the police are still searching for the discarded firearm, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The incident set the Lafayette Square subdivision on edge, as noted by 11Alive, a significant police presence in the vicinity. Officers originally responded to reports of a man wielding a gun at two individuals, one being a child. After briefly appearing to comply by exiting the residence, the man ultimately chose to run.
The "shelter in place" order was issued while officers hunted for the suspect, who was sighted on Dumaine Trace. Cody Alcorn, a correspondent for 11Alive, was at the scene and reported on the deployment of law enforcement, including K-9 units stationed near the GA 400 expressway.
