Hickman, a Republican hailing from Statesboro, will helm the Senate Committee on Education and Youth after being appointed by Lt. Governor Burt Jones on Monday.
With an established history of advocacy for childhood literacy in the Peach State, the senator's new role has resonated with his long-term educational goals. After being appointed, Sen. Hickman told Georgia State Senate Press Office, "I am truly honored to have been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Youth by Lt. Governor Jones." He elaborated on this by committing to the enhancement of learning through literacy, asserting, "Literacy is the cornerstone of learning, and I’m committed to advancing initiatives that ensure our students have the tools they need to thrive."
Sen. Hickman began his political tenure in 2020 and has since championed numerous efforts tailored to the unique demands of his constituency. His district encompasses Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Evans County, along with a piece of Chatham County. Moreover, his engagement is evident through service on various committees including as a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education, as well as handling responsibilities as Secretary of the Senate Committee on Finance. He presides, too, as an Ex-Officio member of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security, an appointment that stands testament to the multifaceted approach Hickman brings to his legislative duties.
