Sen. Emanuel Jones (D–Decatur) led a ceremony last Friday to update the Martin Luther King, Jr. exhibit at the Georgia State Capitol. Following the 41st annual tribute by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Advisory Council, Jones, a founding member and key advocate for the council, revealed new dedication plates for the fourth-floor display. "It was an honor to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy alongside such distinguished guests at the Capitol," Jones told Georgia State Senate Press Office
The event featured former Advisory Council members, including Rita Jackson Samuels and Tony Collins. Farris Christine Watkins, Dr. King’s grandniece, was also present, continuing the family's involvement in civil rights advocacy, according to the Georgia State Senate Press Office.
Sen. Jones spoke about the updated display, saying, "Events like this serve as a powerful reminder that there is still much work to be done to ensure progress continues." He emphasized the need for equality, inclusivity, and unity, values central to Dr. King's teachings. The display serves as a reminder of past progress and a call for continued efforts toward a more just society. Jones also stated, "Let us use this dedication as an opportunity to reignite our collective dedication to these ideals and strive toward a more just and united society," as stated by the Georgia State Senate Press Office.
