Motorists in South Florida, brace yourselves for detours and delays as construction intensifies at the Golden Glades Interchange. This weekend, from yesterday at 11 p.m. until early Monday morning at 5 a.m., drivers aiming to connect between the Palmetto Expressway, Florida's Turnpike, and Interstate 95 will need to seek alternate routes.
CBS News Miami reported that this round-the-clock closure is to allow crews to safely install steel beams for a new flyover ramp. Notably, the Turnpike's connector ramp, linking eastbound and westbound Palmetto Expressway as well as the southbound and northbound Florida's Turnpike with I-95, will be affected.
According to WSVN, the roadwork will also encompass bridge work, stormwater drainage installation, roadway paving, and setting up temporary concrete barrier walls. The Florida Department of Transportation has urged drivers to plan ahead and follow the posted detour signs to navigate the closures effectively.
For those traveling eastbound on SR 826 towards southbound I-95, they will need to continue east, turn right onto NW 7 Avenue Extension before taking the ramp onto southbound I-95. Conversely, travelers on southbound Florida's Turnpike aiming to join southbound I-95 will detour at NW 167 Street, proceed onto southbound SR 915/NE 6 Avenue, turn onto westbound SR 916/Opa-locka Boulevard, then eventually merge onto southbound I-95.
Additionally, detours are in place for northbound I-95 traffic heading to westbound SR 826 or the northbound Florida's Turnpike. Drivers will be directed to continue north, take the ramp to SR 7/US 441/NW 2 Avenue, pivot left onto the NW 7 Avenue Extension, and then access the desired route. FDOT's advisory stressed that road users should allow for extra travel time during these disruptions.
For more information on detours and closures, motorists can visit FDOT's website or other local traffic news sources. Staying informed will undoubtedly help to minimize travel upset during this extensive and necessary infrastructure upgrade at one of the state's busiest interchanges.
