In response to a deepening sex abuse scandal within its ranks, the St. Helens School District has taken measures to outline a plan for systemic change. As part of their efforts, they released a one-page document detailing changes to be made, drawing on feedback from listening sessions with parents, students, and staff. This document comes after the arrest of two teachers and a total of ten staffers being placed on leave implicated in the crisis, as reported by KATU. Acting Superintendent Dr. Steve Webb, having completed the tasks set forth by the district, will be released from his contract with a 10-day termination notice, the exact issuer of which the district didn't initially clarify.
Following the allegations that first came to light in late 2024, the district has not only been working on corrective actions but also engaged in an ongoing conversation with the community, as detailed in a report from KGW. The preliminary "Corrective Action Plan" includes the possible reinstatement of the school resource officer program and the formation of new advisory councils aimed at boosting transparency and community accountability. As a result of the allegations, former teacher Mark Collins and current educator Eric Stearns were arrested, alongside former St. Helens High School principal Katy Wagner, who faces criminal mistreatment and official misconduct charges.
The school district is actively seeking community input on the preliminary plan by encouraging families and members of the community to fill out an online survey. "It is an appropriate time to transition to the successor superintendent to be able to carry out the priorities of the rest of the school year," stated Communication consultant J. Marie in an interview obtained by KGW.
Furthermore, a new acting superintendent is expected to be appointed by early February as Webb concludes his tenure at the end of January, according to a report by KPTV.
