A vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 169 (Belt Highway) and Karnes Road in St. Joseph has led to substantial damage, rendering the traffic signal mast arm inoperable, and as a consequence, routes to and from Karnes Road on the Belt Highway have been blocked off. MoDOT reported that the traffic signal, which is essential for coordinating traffic flow, has been compromised due to the incident, causing disruptions in the usual commuting patterns with no straightforward detour available.
As of now, there's no clear timetable for when the mess will be untangled and full access between Karnes Road and the Belt Highway will be reinstated, this leaves travelers in a lurch—it's a guessing game on when normalcy will return to the roads of St. Joseph. Motorists can still traverse the Belt Highway in both directions despite the significant damage to the signal and the ongoing repairs, which have yet to lock in a finish date.
While the work to restore the signal is underway, MoDOT has advised drivers to stay vigilant by adhering to safety protocols: "buckling up, keeping your phone down, slowing down and moving over in work zones." The agency further emphasizes the importance of planning commutes in advance to avoid the disruption, urging drivers to check for potential work zones via their travel information website.
