A woman from St. Louis County has been sentenced to three years in prison related to a fatal shooting that took place in the North Pointe neighborhood in May 2023. According to court documents, Daija’h Jackson, 26, pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the death of 28-year-old Brandon L. West. St. Louis City Circuit Court reported that the incident occurred during a fight involving the families of both individuals.
Jackson admitted to firing a 9mm pistol during an altercation between her sister and West's sister on May 9, 2023. The circuit court revealed that West was shot as he attempted to intervene in the fight taking place at a residence in the 5900 block of Summit Place. In a statement read in St. Louis City Circuit Court, West's family described him as a "one-of-a-kind person" and expressed the profound difficulty they face in grappling to come to terms with his absence. "To lose someone like him is unreal," the family's statement shared, "It's so hard to face the fact that we will never see him again."
Circuit Judge Christopher McGraugh handed down the sentence yesterday, which included a suspended seven-year term and three years of probation for involuntary manslaughter. Jackson was also given a concurrent three-year prison term for armed criminal action. This structured approach to punishment allows for a portion of the sentence to be possibly mitigated by good behavior and compliance with probation terms. It is intended to afford Jackson the opportunity to, eventually, recover from her actions and contribute back to the community.
The case, documented under number 2322-CR00901-01, has brought closure to a grueling process for both the West family and Jackson.
