A high school student was detained yesterday after being found with a handgun at Overton High School. According to WREG, the incident occurred as students were heading to lunch, when a school officer, acting on a tip, approached the student and inquired about the presence of a weapon. Upon being questioned, the student attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.
Memphis Police Department officers responded to the scene at approximately 11:15 a.m., following a report from the school officer. The police discovered the handgun concealed in the student's crossover bag. In a statement obtained by Local Memphis, the MPD stated the student had acquired the gun from "someone" and decided to bring the firearm to school to allegedly safeguard it away from his siblings.
Following the arrest, the student was taken to the Shelby County Juvenile Detention Center. Concerning the sequence of events, FOX13 Memphis reported the weapon was found inside a black Champion crossover bag. The school, collaborating with law enforcement, ensured no one was harmed during the incident.
MCS officials responded to the occurrence, emphasizing the swiftness of the staff's reaction to a report of a student with a weapon. "Earlier today, staff at Overton High School received a report of a student with a weapon. The weapon was confiscated, and no one was harmed. The appropriate disciplinary actions were administered, and the student was removed from the school. Parents are encouraged to check backpacks each day and discuss the consequences of bringing a weapon to school," the officials noted, as per Local Memphis.
