A recent study is raising alarm bells with findings that put several Arizona highways at the top of the list for the most dangerous U.S. roads when it comes to speeding and fatal crashes. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, Truckinfo.net has identified five Arizona highways among the 10 most perilous nationwide, with Interstate 10 in Maricopa County leading the grim tally with 17 fatalities.
Additional data reveals that Maricopa County is the nation's second worst for speeding-related fatalities, with 232 deaths, trailing only Los Angeles County’s 322. This may to partially explain why the Interstate 10 itself is listed three different times for separate sections. Such tragic numbers seem to reaffirm the grim reality that's unfolding on these stretches of pavement, where life often unceremoniously terminates in a collision. The study included, but didn't limit itself to, other notorious roadways like US-60, Interstate 40, and Interstate 17 in Arizona.
Meanwhile, North Texas isn't spared from this deadly trend. A WFAA article highlights similar concerns, noting that the I-30 in Dallas County ranks amongst the top five most dangerous roads nationwide for speeding. The Lone Star State led with a staggering 1,371 speeding-related deaths in 2022. The cited research also shows a worrying trend where, despite national decreases in crashes since 2013, nearly one-third of fatal accidents still involve speeding, and deaths have risen by nearly 25% since 2019.
The unfortunate rankings continue with Arizona, South Carolina, and Wyoming having the most speeding-related deaths per vehicle mile traveled. Highlighting a persistent and widespread problem, the truckinfo.net study used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and U.S. Census Bureau, to paint a stark picture of a nation still struggling deeply with excessive speed on its roadways.
Although statistics can often come across cold and impersonal, each number here represents a life snatched unexpectedly, communities disrupted, and families forever altered—all bound by a thread of preventable recklessness. These reports are more than a wake-up call; they are tragic testimonies of the need for a sustained, committed effort to promote road safety and drastically reduce the devastating impact of speeding on our streets and highways.
