The City of Tacoma is set to mark Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as an official day of observance. This year, Tacoma joins various cities across the nation to honor the legacy of Dr. King with closures and special schedules on January 20. According to an announcement from the City of Tacoma, municipal offices will not open that day, allowing employees and community members alike to reflect on the civil rights leader's enduring impact.

The observance, however, does not translate to a halt in all city services. The Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center, located at 3510 S. Mullen St., will operate during its regular hours, from 8 AM to 5:30 P.M. In addition, curbside collection services for garbage, recycling, and yard/food waste are scheduled to run unaffected. These operational decisions underscore the balance between commemorating a national hero and maintaining essential services for the city's residents.

Public libraries will also be joining in the observance of Dr. King's contributions, with all Tacoma Public Library locations closing their doors on January 20. The brief respite from daily operations offers a silent nod to his work, and potentially an opportunity for community members to engage with Dr. King’s writings and teachings in their reflective manner.

Further adding to the adjustments on this day, there will be no enforcement of parking by City staff.
