A 15-year-old boy died after stealing and crashing a Sandy Springs police car on Monday near South Forsyth High School. Deputies found the stolen vehicle on Peachtree Parkway shortly after the theft was reported, according to FOX5 Atlanta.
During the attempt to apprehend the young individual just before 7 p.m., Forsyth County deputies initiated a "box-in" maneuver, according to a statement obtained by The Georgia Sun. This action resulted in the stolen patrol car colliding with a marked Forsyth County patrol car. Upon stopping the vehicle, the deputies discovered the teenager was bleeding from a gunshot wound, reportedly self-inflicted, and was unresponsive.
Despite efforts to save him, the teen was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was later discovered that he was a relative of the Sandy Springs officer whose patrol car was stolen. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. Following the tragedy, resources such as the Georgia Crisis & Access Line and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are available for those in crisis, including teens.
