The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) announced yesterday that a third arrest has been made in the tragic demise of 19-year-old Kennedi Aniyah Flora Jones. Zion Lamont Jennings, 18, was apprehended in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, and faces charges including murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to WBTV.
Jones was discovered on Christmas inside a vehicle that had careened down an embankment near Shamrock Drive, and later succumbed to her injuries in a local hospital, reports WSOC-TV. CMPD carried out the first arrest on December 31, apprehending 21-year-old Dreshon Moreno, who has been charged with murder, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. On January 7, the authorities arrested James Ashley Mason, 24; he was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy.
In a subsequent development, WCNC detailed Jennings' initial court appearance which took place Wednesday morning, following his arrest with assistance from the Winston-Salem Police. Jennings is currently held under no bond. Additionally, CMPD noted that Jones' next of kin had been informed of the recent arrest.
CMPD, working with a gang unit and local authorities, facilitated the most recent capture of Jennings, a report by WSOC-TV cited. The investigation into the events that led to the tragic end of Jones's life continues, as the community grapples with the violence that snatched away a young woman in the premature hours. CMPD is encouraging anyone with further information to come forward and speak to a Homicide Unit detective, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
