WNDU, the NBC affiliate in South Bend, reported that the two officers were listed in stable condition at a nearby hospital, while the motives behind the shooting have yet to be elucidated.
Responding to the violence, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun posted, "As details emerge about the shooting in Elkhart, we are in communication with state and local law enforcement. Elkhart Police Department spokesperson Jessica McBrier briefed the media with more details. According to a statement obtained by FOX 9, McBrier confirmed that two people were pronounced dead inside the store and acknowledged that the two officers "sustained gunfire," but reassured that they were in stable condition at the hospital. "It’s a sad day in Elkhart," McBrier said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected."
While the Elkhart community grapples with the aftermath, officials have made it clear that there is no continued danger to the public. The District Attorney's homicide unit has taken the helm of the ensuing investigation, McBrier reassured, there is no further threat to the community.
