The new year in El Paso has begun on a grim note with the city registering its first traffic fatality of 2025. On January 1st, the Special Traffic Investigation Unit responded to a devastating vehicle collision on Loop 375 near Mile Marker 42. According to the City of El Paso from the El Paso Police Department, D Aundre Kahlil Malik Laffoon was operating a Volkswagen Jetta at high speeds when he lost control and struck a 2023 Lexus. After his vehicle rolled over, Laffoon was ejected onto the roadway.
The tragedy was compounded when the driver of a Hyundai Santa Fe, traveling north on Joe Battle, struck Laffoon who had already been ejected from the initial impact. Speed is indicated as a contributing factor to the collision, including the presence of a pedestrian in the roadway. "The investigation is ongoing," the press release notes. This marks the first traffic fatality of the year and tragically aligns with last year’s count, which stood at one on the same date in 2024.
