Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a traffic incident that resulted in the death of an elderly man from Waimea. The man, 84-year-old Colin Perry, died from injuries sustained in a vehicle collision. The incident took place on a gravel path in Waimea, leading to a series of events with fatal consequences.
On December 15, 2024, Perry's 2016 Toyota Tacoma collided with a parked 2005 Honda Pilot. Following the impact, the Tacoma rolled backward, trapping Perry inside. He was able to free himself, and bystanders prevented the truck from moving further. However, the injuries Perry sustained were severe. According to a statement from local authorities, emergency personnel from the Hawai‘i Fire Department transported Perry to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was stabilized but listed in critical condition.
Perry's injuries required further treatment, prompting his transfer from the local hospital to Queens Medical Center on Oahu. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on December 20, 2024. According to Hawai‘i Island police, the year saw 26 fatal crashes resulting in 29 deaths, reflecting the impact of road-related incidents across the islands.
Although Perry's accident occurred on private property, classifying it as a non-traffic fatality, it adds to the total number of such fatalities in 2024, which saw two compared to one in the previous year. The investigation is ongoing, with the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit leading the inquiry. Police are requesting witnesses to come forward with any information that could help clarify the events.
