
A devastating wrong-way collision in Port St. Lucie has claimed the life of a woman and left a toddler with serious injuries. CBS12 reports that the incident occurred yesterday evening at the intersection of Northeast St. James Drive and Charleston Oaks Drive.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department, who responded to the crash around 7:05 p.m., determined that a Kia Soul was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Northeast St. James Drive, colliding head-on with a northbound Toyota Camry, according to details from their investigation. Driving the Toyota, a 3-year-old passenger, who was using a seatbelt but was not in a car seat, was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital with serious injuries.
A 40-year-old woman, seated in the middle back seat of the Toyota and not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Lanwood Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. WPBF clarified that the deceased was the mother of the injured child. The Kia Soul's driver was also taken to a local hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
Police have indicated that neither impairment nor speed are considered factors in this tragedy.
