After a series of collisions that caused significant disruptions, the Turner Turnpike in Wellston, Oklahoma, has been cleared and reopened for traffic in both directions. The road closures, which created considerable delays for motorists, affected the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-44 near State Highway 66. According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), as reported by KFOR, the incidents involved multiple crashes and resulted in the eastbound and westbound lanes of the turnpike being narrowed to one lane each direction around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The News On 6 report noted that the multiple crashes occurred in a construction zone and that the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority confirmed the full reopening of I-44, including the Turner Turnpike stretches near State Highway 66 at mile marker 158. This restoration of normal traffic flow came as a relief to those who commute regularly on these major roadways.
As per a statement acquired by KOCO, Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials indicated that traffic had been impacted for approximately 3.5 hours on Saturday. Though details regarding the specific causes or any potential injuries arising from the crashes were not immediately available, the reopening signifies the clearing of the earlier congestion and hazards. It's not yet clear as to how the crash might impact the ongoing construction project's timeline.
