A birthday celebration in Oakland was cut short last Friday night when gunfire broke out, leaving two dead and another wounded, according to reports from local law enforcement. The Oakland Police Department responded to ShotSpotter alerts in the 5500 block of Telegraph Avenue around 10 p.m., where they discovered three victims with gunshot wounds. The incident took a fatal turn with the death of two individuals at the scene, while a third victim has been confirmed to be in stable condition at a local hospital.
Oakland police identified the two deceased victims as a 19-year-old man from Richmond and a 20-year-old man from Berkeley, as CBS News Bay Area reported. The surviving 29-year-old man from San Pablo was quickly transported to the hospital. The tragic event took place during a 16th birthday party held at the East Bay Community Space, intended to be a night of joy for twin adolescents.
According to surveillance footage shared with media, at least 25 rounds were fired into the crowd, causing attendees to scramble for safety. "This is definitely a surprise," a neighbor, only identified as Ben, told CBS News Bay Area, noting that the typically quiet area is known for being safe and incidents like this are unexpected.
As per KRON4, Huy Nguyen, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association, lamented that Oakland is experiencing a surge in crime in response to cuts in police services. He expressed that despite reductions, officers are determined to continue protecting citizens. "Oakland police officers are doing everything we can to assist the public. We will continue to do our best to protect citizens despite ongoing and upcoming cuts by the city council to public safety services," Nguyen stated.
