Tragedy struck I-57 in Chicago's South suburbs where separate vehicular accidents claimed the lives of two individuals, as reported by Illinois State Police. The first incident occurred on the northbound lanes just south of 159th Street around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, involving two cars and multiple injuries with at least one fatality reported CBS News Chicago details that in response to this crash, traffic was rerouted, and lanes were closed but eventually reopened at approximately 4:40 a.m. the following Thursday.
The night's darkness had scarcely begun to lift when a second cataclysm unfurled on said expressway in the clearer early morning hours at 1:35 a.m., upon the southbound side at the very location of 159th Street, this incident involving three vehicles this time and also culminating in at least one person's death, the state police confirmed.
In both harrowing incidents, details remain scant, as authorities have not released the identities of those deceased nor have the causes behind these collisions been made clear to the public. Following the second calamity, Illinois State Police diverted traffic off at 159th Street and subsequently reopened the southbound lanes just before 5:30 a.m., as per information obtained from ABC7 Chicago.
At this time state officials have confirmed that both unfortunate incidents remain under meticulous investigation, as they seek to unravel the sequences that led up to these fatal occurrences. The enforcement efforts after the first crash could not prevent the second some hours later, reaffirming the unpredictable nature of such tragic roadway episodes. In the wake of these misfortunes all lanes of I-57 have since been reopened, restoring the flow of traffic, whence again the city's mournful heart beats on, in the shadow of these losses.
