A disturbing act of violence has shaken the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation as 23-year-old Jeremiah Hight faces charges for the murder of a young child. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a federal grand jury indicted Hight on one count of second-degree murder in Indian Country and one count of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
Hight's arrest came after being charged with a criminal complaint authorized by Magistrate Judge James Candelaria on December 19, 2024. Following an arrest on the Navajo Reservation on December 24, Hight appeared before the District of Arizona on December 26 and is currently being transported to Colorado.
The complaint and subsequent indictment allege that in the early morning of December 11, 2024, Hight discharged a rifle twenty-four times into a residence on the reservation located in Towaoc, Colorado. The gunfire tragically resulted in the death of a seven-year-old Ute Mountain Ute Tribe member. While the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Indian Affairs is ongoing, the charges against Hight remain allegations, reminding us that the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Assistant United States Attorneys Jeffrey K. Graves, R. Josh Player, and Lisa Franceware are handling the prosecution of a case that has undoubtedly cast a long shadow over the community. As Hight awaits further proceedings, details about the motives and circumstances surrounding this incident are yet to be fully unearthed, with many turning their gaze toward the unfolding legal process.
