Hawaii will see better weather soon as a cold front moves out, but the eastern islands will still have heavy showers and thunderstorms through the morning. The Big Island is facing possible heavy rain and strong winds, with a High Wind Warning and Flood Watch in effect. Once the front passes, cooler, drier air will bring back typical trade winds by the weekend, as reported by the National Weather Service.
According to the same National Weather Service update, a storm force low, stationed approximately 570 miles north of Lihue, Kauai, is still influencing the region's weather, intensifying winds on the Big Island, where a High Wind Warning is in effect until this afternoon, meanwhile, the cold front's progression across the state has been met with diminished forcing and drier air indicating a decrease in the risk of flooding as the day continues; the frontline concerns now shift to localized strong turbulence and diminished visibility for aviators as well as challenging marine conditions, with Gale Warnings still in effect for parts of the surrounding waters.
Aviation conditions are turbulent around Maui and the Big Island, where heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to compromise visibility and introduce the risk of low ceilings, in light of the conditions AIRMET Sierra has been activated for mountain obscurations and AIRMET Tango for moderate turbulence across the state, this information comes from a recent forecast which also advises of potential challenges such as strong winds, particularly along the islands' north and east sides, as per the National Weather Service.
There’s a Gale Warning near the Big Island due to strong winds, but things should get better in the next 24 hours as the wind shifts. However, small craft should stay cautious as conditions improve slowly. A Small Craft Advisory is still in effect for other waters. High Surf Advisories are up for northern shores, and a new swell from the northwest will make surf even higher through Saturday.
Moving past the storm, Hawaii does not anticipate critical fire weather conditions during the immediate forecast period despite the recent extreme weather, the culmination of this tumultuous phase seems to lean toward the pleasant, breezy trade winds detailed by the National Weather Service that are expected to return to the state shortly offering residents and visitors some relief in the wake of the storm.
