The upcoming weekend could be a test of patience for drivers in Arizona as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced closures on one of the state's busiest thoroughfares. Beginning 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, eastbound Interstate 10 will be shut down between SR 51 and US 60, according to ADOT. This closure, necessary for a traffic shift, will also affect several on-and off-ramps in the area, meaning, travelers will need to find alternative routes and allow for extra travel time.
ADOT has provided a list of closures that include the southbound SR 143 to eastbound I-10 ramp and the southbound I-17 to eastbound I-10 ramp, among others. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Jefferson Street and the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) ramp from eastbound I-10 to Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) will be inaccessible. In addition, the eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Third and Seventh Streets, Buckeye Road, 24th, 32nd, 40th Streets, and Broadway Road will also remain closed through the weekend.
ADOT advises motorists to use eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) or to westbound US 60 to bypass the closure. Another option for those traveling from the West Valley to the Southeast Valley is to use Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway), a relief from the jammed paths typically frequented by commuters. By starting from I-10 and 59th Avenue, travelers can head south and east to reconnect with eastbound I-10 south of Chandler Boulevard.
For the most up-to-date information, ADOT suggests downloading TheCurve app or visiting their website's Alerts section, especially since schedules are subject to change due to factors like weather or other unexpected events.
