Wimberley ISD announced an early dismissal for students today due to a power outage impacting several schools. As reported by CBS Austin, the interruption led to a premature end to the school day for Jacob's Well Elementary, Danforth Junior High School, and Wimberley High School. Parents were prompted to begin picking up their students after the outage persisted across most campuses.
With an immediate dismissal granted to student drivers at Wimberley High School, the post on the district's Facebook page mentioned that those who drive themselves were the first to leave. Delving further into the details provided by CBS Austin, lunch provisions were in place for students in need, ensuring they were taken care of during an event that, without necessarily intending it, threw plans for a regular school day into disarray.
Meanwhile, Hays Free Press reports that bus riders and other students unable to be picked up early were permitted to stay at their respective campuses until regular dismissal time. This decision was made to ensure that young bus-riders would not be left unsupervised at home. The situation, as noted, was not reflected at Blue Hole Primary elementary, which was not affected by the outage and maintained its typical school schedule.
As the news unfolded, the Wimberley ISD Transportation Department adjusted by sticking to its normal dismissal bus routes for the afternoon. Hays Free Press added that the district chose not to run these routes earlier to avoid having the youngest of the students unsupervised; these students would usually have someone waiting for them after being dropped off by the bus under normal circumstances. The disruption appeared designed to keep the unavoidable change in routine as minimal as possible, delivering students home safely.
