In an incident that brought emergency services rushing to the scene, a young woman's SUV ended up in the Jordan River following a traffic mishap yesterday afternoon. According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the 22-year-old driver miraculously escaped injury after crashing into the water in the Rose Park neighborhood.
The episode began unfolding around 3:18 p.m., this report being confirmed upon SLC911 receiving word of the woman trapped in her vehicle, information soon followed with the revelation that her SUV had veered off the roadway and careened into the adjacent river. Arriving on the scene, the Salt Lake City Fire Department alongside SLCPD officers discovered that the woman had already self-rescued, climbing out through the passenger side window of the partially submerged vehicle, and the banks of the river mercifully held the SUV from being claimed entirely by the water.
Currently, the official cause of the incident remains under scrutiny as authorities probe into the possibility that the driver's loss of vehicular control may have been caused by fatigue-induced sleep behind the wheel. A crash into a river like this one evokes not only the peril of our city's roadways but also the quick response of our emergency teams who are called upon to act swiftly to protect life and investigate circumstances.
While thankfully no injuries were reported in the aftermath of the crash, the images released by the SLCPD capture the severity of the ordeal, showing the city's brave firefighters inspecting the half-drenched SUV, the scene a stark reminder of the dangers that can unexpectedly manifest on any given day. These photos bear witness to the incident, and they have been shared for media use with appropriate credit extended to the department.
