Early Wednesday in the South Chicago neighborhood, tragedy struck when a Metra Electric train collided with an SUV, leading to one fatality and three injuries according to both the Chicago Sun-Times and ABC7 Chicago. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of 87th Street and Baltimore Avenue.
Metra officials detailed that the northbound equipment train on the South Chicago branch struck the eastbound vehicle, sadly one unidentified individual was declared deceased at the scene, and two occupants were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn while another was transported to Trinity Hospital. Their conditions have yet to be disclosed. Metra's investigation is still ongoing to understand how such a grave incident could have taken place especially considering the crossing gates were confirmed to be operational at the time of the collision.
Despite the serious nature of the crash, Metra confirmed that the service on the Metra Electric Line Wednesday morning would continue unaffected. This may provide some solace to the commuters who rely on this line for their morning travels, as their routines won't be disrupted by the aftermath of last night's events. Furthermore, the investigation into the crash by Metra aims to uncover the specifics of how the train and SUV came to meet so fatally.
