The Akron Police Department has released body camera footage and additional details regarding the fatal officer-involved shooting of Marcus Leonard Smith, a 39-year-old Cincinnati man. According to WKYC, the incident occurred on Monday morning when officers encountered Smith driving a stolen white Toyota Camry in Summit County.
The situation escalated near Lakeshore Boulevard and Kenmore Boulevard around 8:45 a.m., leading to an exchange of gunfire. Smith allegedly fired several rounds at officers, prompting them to return fire and fatally strike him quickly. The department has also confirmed that a handgun and keys to a vehicle involved in a Columbus robbery were recovered from the scene and Smith's possession, respectively. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently examining this incident, while the Akron Police Department has openly shared not only the evidence found but also the harrowing body camera footage of the exchange.
Body camera video obtained by FOX8 News shows a tense confrontation with officers commanding Smith to drop his weapon multiple times before shots were fired. Smith was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified Smith, with Akron Police Chief Brian Harding expressing condolences to his family, "Any loss of life is tragic and my condolences go out to the family of Marcus Smith as they grieve the loss of their loved one."
Use of Force Expert Tim Dimoff, when interviewed by News 5 Cleveland, commended the officers' actions under the circumstances. "I think this is a textbook reaction from the officers responding, spreading out, having to respond with high-level use of force," said Dimoff. The video further reveals that officers continued to shout commands for Smith to drop his gun even after he had fallen to the ground before firing additional shots. Following the shooting, officers swiftly moved to administer first aid and call EMS despite the preceding shootout. This incident adds another chapter to the national conversation on policing and the use of force as officials and the community dissect and examine the details of that fateful encounter.
