In warning locals about the perils of sophisticated phishing scams, the Albany Police Department recently shared news of an arrest tied to such a scheme. On Thursday, an Albany resident alerted authorities to a dubious email they'd received, purporting an accidental deposit to their PayPal account, a detailed social media post from the department. Responding to the deceptive message led to a troubling series of interactions, with the victim instructed on how to return the supposed overpayment and later approached for more money under false pretexts.

The Albany Police carried out a coordinated response when the resident reported the ongoing scam, resulting in a sting operation yesterday, according to the Albany Police Department's post. As a different suspect came to collect yet another unreasonable payment at the resident's doorstep, officers intervened at around 1:15 pm. This unsuspecting individual was swiftly apprehended and is now facing charges related to financial elder abuse and conspiracy.

"The people involved in this type of criminal activity can be very convincing so please be cautious with any correspondence received electronically," the Albany Police Department cautioned in their social media post.
