Albany's South End Children’s Cafe is receiving a $500,000 boost from New York State to expand and revamp its facilities, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. The funding focuses on improving the building's infrastructure, ensuring more kids have access to the wholesome meals and educational programs they provide.
"Every child deserves to thrive and access to healthy food and a supportive educational environment is a proven tool to help kids succeed," were the words Governor Hochul expressed, as reported by the state's official website. Also mentioned was the alignment of this contribution with the governor's "Unplug and Play" initiative, aiming to reduce kids' screen time and instead, promote in-person interaction within community spaces like the South End Children's Cafe.
The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) is tasked with administering this capital. Planned enhancements include major updates to windows, doors, plumbing, and electrical systems, which, once outfitted with state-of-the-art kitchen appliances, aim to welcome even more children. According to DASNY President and CEO Robert J. Rodriguez, the investment will strengthen an organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and providing educational support, ensuring the cafe's influence stretches further into the Albany community.
The South End Children’s Cafe, established in 2015, offers not only free nutritious meals, but pairs sustenance with homework help, various enrichment activities, and family support services. Tracie Killar, the Cafe's Executive Director, emphasized the transformative nature of the funding, revealing, "We are deeply grateful to Governor Hochul and New York State for this transformative investment. This funding will significantly expand our capacity to serve children and families in the South End of Albany. Our new space will enable us to provide more meals, enhance our educational programming and create a welcoming environment where children can thrive academically, socially and physically," as she told the state's official site.
The local investment doesn't stop at the state level. Albany's Mayor Kathy Sheehan highlighted the city's own financial contribution, a solid $1 million ARPA grant awarded to the cafe, supplementing Governor Hochul's announcement. Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy emphasized how the cafe combines a mix of essential ingredients for a nurturing atmosphere for kids.
State Senator Patricia Fahy and Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, both strong supporters of the initiative, acknowledged the critical role the South End Children's Cafe plays in downtown Albany.
