A tragedy unfolded in Antioch as police discovered four young children in a state of neglect, prompting immediate medical attention and the arrest of their mother for child abuse-related charges. According to a press release from the Antioch Police Department, a welfare check yesterday led to the alarming discovery after a concerned individual found one of the children, a 2-year-old, alone outside a residence on the 2000 block of Spruce Way.

Responding officers arrived at the scene shortly before 5 p.m. to find the front door unsecured and, upon entering the home, located three additional children ages 2, 5, and 8. The mother, 36-year-old Shante Alberty, was absent when authorities arrived, although she returned later only to be taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on counts related to child abuse.

In the wake of the incident, it was determined by CONFIRE HAZMAT that the conditions inside the home were uninhabitable. The Antioch Police Department's Field Services Bureau stated that all four children were transported to nearby hospitals, where they received medical clearance before being placed under the care of Child and Family Services (CFS).
