An Arizona man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputy Juan "Johnny" Ruiz in 2021, as reported by ABC15. On February 21, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office confirmed that 34-year-old Clinton Hurley received a natural life sentence after pleading guilty in December to 16 charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, and theft. Following Hurley's sentencing, the family of Deputy Ruiz expressed relief at the court proceedings' conclusion to ABC15.
Hurley's violent confrontation with Deputy Ruiz occurred on October 9, 2021, when he was brought in on multiple felony warrants to an MCSO substation in Avondale. Initially handcuffed, Hurley became combative once Deputy Ruiz removed the restraints to place him in a cell. As per a statement from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, body camera footage showed Hurley attacking the deputy with the blunt end of a pair of medical shears and punching him multiple times while Deputy Ruiz lay on the floor. Ruiz later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
After the attack, Hurley managed to escape by using Deputy Ruiz's keys to steal his patrol car and subsequently a second gun belonging to Ruiz from the vehicle. ABC15 reported that Hurley then attempted a carjacking, before finally stealing a car from another victim. His crime spree continued until he was shot by a homeowner in Tonopah after firing shots at their family.
Initially, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office disclosed its intent to seek the death penalty for Hurley if he was found guilty of first-degree murder. However, he accepted a plea deal in December 2024, which eliminated the possibility of the death penalty. "It’s a very sad day. Not only for deputy Ruiz’s family but his MCSO family. And it should also be a sad day for all the people that live in Maricopa County because deputy Ruiz worked for them," Sheriff Jerry Sheridan was quoted by ABC15 at the sentencing. He further added, "The sentence today is life, natural life, which means he will never leave the prison system alive."
