The Atlanta community is reeling from a tragic loss following severe weather that swept through the area, leaving one family in particular to grapple with an irreplaceable void. Edward Johnson, 61, a well-regarded father and carpenter, was killed when an early-morning storm on Sunday sent a large tree crashing onto his family home. His wife, Diane Jones, survived but not without enduring the harrowing ordeal of being trapped under the rubble alongside her husband until she could be rescued.
According to Atlanta News First, the Johnson's daughter, Tabatha, recounted the traumatic experience, "She kind of shielded him. She got over him and everything came crashing down on both of them," and in an attempt to locate her mother amidst the chaos, Tamaya, added, "I kept telling my mom to talk so I can be able to hear her and pinpoint where she is because I can’t see anything. She was under rubble." The storm, part of a strong system, not only claimed Johnson’s life but also left a swath of damage and debris across metro Atlanta.
As a man who had helped build his own house, Johnson was known for being far more than just a provider for his family. His skills as a carpenter were complemented by the love he had for life, with Atlanta News First reporting how his daughter, Teanna, remembered him: "He loved to dance." But more than that, Johnson was considered a local celebrity, a family man, and a jokester, whose unexpected passing has reminded his loved ones to cherish every moment with those they hold dear.
The family is currently amidst the sorrowful task of arranging a funeral for their patriarch. Johnson’s daughter, Tamaya Jones shared the lasting impact of her father's presence: "He was our glue, for real. Even if you were feeling down, you could go around him, and it was the best energy ever." Teanna Jones also expressed her grief, telling FOX 5 Atlanta, "He’s not my biological father, but he took me in as a kid and that’s the only dad that I know, so it’s very hard for me."
Amidst these difficult times, the community has extended support to the bereaved family through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and temporary housing needs. Contributions are being collected, and those who wish to offer support can visit their GoFundMe campaign.
