To escalate safety and security within Baltimore's Little Italy, neighborhood leaders have heralded the inception of a new network of surveillance cameras. According to WMAR2 News, these cameras have been strategically mounted and linked to a centralized hub, designed to be easily accessible to local law enforcement and the community to bolster the neighborhood's security infrastructure.
Lisa Regnante, the Little Italy Neighborhood Association president, underscored the significance of the new system's geographical benefits. "Our intersections on all four sides of our neighborhood are gateways," she said, per WMAR2 News. She also noted that this setup is critical for monitoring occurrences within Little Italy and capturing activities that transit through the area. Furthermore, Giovanna Blatterman of Café Gia articulated a resounding sense of pride in Little Italy's status as one of the safest neighborhoods in Baltimore City while asserting that safety can never be taken for granted.
The deployment of these security cameras was driven by grant funding, an initiative credited to the efforts of Senate President Bill Ferguson, who played a pivotal role in securing the necessary resources. Meanwhile, the interconnected nature of the camera system has already had tangible impacts on community safety. "The camera center can look immediately on the cameras to see in real time what's going on," Regnante explained in a WBALTV interview. This ability to swiftly respond and potentially solve crimes in progress demonstrates the system’s practical application in real-time surveillance, much to the appreciation of residents and business owners like Pamela Needleman, who acknowledged the importance of such technology in uncovering otherwise unnoticed criminal activity.
