Bay Area BART Stations to Host 'Bach in the Subways' Musical Celebration for CommutersSource: Bay Area Rapid Transit

As part of an international event that's been harmonizing public spaces since 2010, BART has announced its call for musicians to fill its stations with the timeless compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach from March 21 through 31st. The initiative 'Bach in the Subways' celebrates the iconic composer's birthday by inviting artists to perform in over 150 cities worldwide, turning transit hubs into impromptu concert halls.

The event, which began spontaneously by New York cellist Dale Henderson, has spread to 40 countries, bringing free classical music to the masses. BART stations will join the global stage as local talents showcase their skills. Performances are set to be held in non-paid areas of the stations, ensuring that music aficionados can enjoy the harmonious offerings without spending a dime.

Interested artists are encouraged to register online as either solo acts or groups. While the emphasis is on Bach, BART doesn't mandate a strict Bach-only repertoire. Following registration, musicians are required to apply for BART's free Expressive Activity Permit and, upon approval, can tote their instruments and take part in the event.

There are a few house rules to keep the event in tune. According to BART, performers must "not affix any signs on the walls, do not use amplified music, and only perform in non-paid areas of the stations." Furthermore, to maintain the spirit of the event, 'Bach in the Subways' insists that musicians not solicit tips or accept any money, framing their performances as "a shared gift of musical joy."
