Bay Area skiers and snowboarders, listen up: with a forecast promising a combo of sunshine and fresh powder ahead, you're gonna want to consider the traffic situation if you're headed to the slopes this weekend. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the I-70 Mountain Corridor is about to see a whole lot of tire tracks. Friday alone is expecting a double whammy of traffic peaks, once in the morning and again around 6 p.m.
After the recent snow deluge, crews have been plowing non-stop and averting avalanches like it's nobody's business. Despite these efforts, Saturday won't be much better, with CDOT predicting "extremely heavy traffic and delays". With last year's post-President's Day weekend as a frame of reference, they're bracing for traffic metering at the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) as early as 2 p.m. which could last until the evening commute dwindles.
Now, Sunday's forecast is looking bright. That also means, however, that every snow chaser and their mom will probably be trying to make the most of it. CDOT estimates around 3,000 vehicles per hour will barrel through the EJMT, that's enough traffic to prompt metering starting in the afternoon.
