Boulder community members were thrust into a state of apprehension on Monday when a man, reported to be in a state of personal crisis with a weapon, sparked a law enforcement response that ultimately ended in tragedy. According to the City of Boulder, the crisis began with a call around 11:36 a.m. regarding a man threatening to inflict harm upon himself and others.
The situation escalated the following day, as the University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) was alerted at 1:38 p.m. to an individual on campus who was seen with a firearm falling out of his trousers. As detailed in the official report, the man retrieved the gun, fled the scene, and was observed driving away, effectively prompting a "shelter in place" directive for those nearby. The witness account added another layer of urgency as the officers initiated a search for the suspect, now connected to both incidents.
Authorities pieced together the calls and additional intelligence to tentatively identify the individual. It became apparent that he was not only armed but also seeking a woman with whom he had a previous relationship, a scenario further complicated by the revelation of an active domestic violence protection order against the man.
In the ensuing hours, officers canvassed the city. Their efforts bore fruit just after 3 p.m. when the suspect's car was located and immobilized on 40th Street, just north of Table Mesa Drive. A Boulder Police SWAT team was engaged as the armed suspect refused to relinquish his weapon. For over four hours, officers engaged with the man, attempting to resolve the situation without further incident. However, at around 7:15 p.m., their negotiation efforts were rendered moot as the suspect took his own life.
