Big shifts are hitting the higher echelons of Utah's law enforcement as Brian Redd, the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Corrections (UDC), is set to become the new head of the Salt Lake City Police Department. In a move that has set the state's correctional community abuzz, Jared Garcia, who has been serving as UDC's Deputy Executive Director, was tapped by Gov. Spencer Cox to fill Redd's soon-to-be-vacated seat. With over two decades of experience in law enforcement and leadership under his belt, Garcia appears poised to steer the department forward.
An announcement of the leadership changes was issued by UDC yesterday, revealing that Redd would commence his new role on March 4. Sharing his sentiments regarding his departure, Redd described his tenure with UDC as "an honor and a privilege," expressing how much he would miss his colleagues. Announcing Garcia as his successor, Redd stated, "it has been an honor and a privilege to serve alongside you over the past two years," as obtained by Utah Department of Corrections. Redd's endorsement of Garcia seems heartfelt, noting his extensive experience and anticipating his positive impact on the team.
Gov. Cox praised Garcia's track record and expressed his confidence in Garcia's ability to drive the UDC toward its goals. "I am confident that under his leadership, the Department of Corrections will continue to advance its mission to protect communities and improve lives," Cox said, as per Utah Department of Corrections. Garcia responded to this nod of approval with his brand of humble gratitude, acknowledging the honor of his selection and his excitement to further the work of the "exceptional team at UDC."
Emphasizing the seamless transition, Redd said in an email that Garcia was the right choice. Having recruited Garcia to the department after taking the reins in 2023, Redd expressed his faith in Garcia's capabilities: "I have worked side by side with Jared for over two decades, and I believe the Governor made the right selection." Moving forward, Garcia is tasked with continuing the department's efforts and supporting the staff in their various roles, according to the Utah Department of Corrections.
