The City of Chandler is stepping up its game in supporting autism awareness by hosting a free screening of the powerful documentary "In A Different Key." Based on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book by journalists Caren Zucker and John Donvan, the film dives into the world of autism, as seen through the eyes of a mother searching for the first individual ever diagnosed with the condition. The event, organized by the city's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division alongside the Community Services and Police departments, aims to foster a conversation around love, acceptance, and inclusion for those on the autism spectrum.
Set to unfold at the Chandler Center for the Arts on March 9 at 1 p.m., attendees must snag their spots online in advance, as noted on the official City of Chandler website. The ticket price? Free ninety-nine. That's right, it won't cost a dime. But get this: spaces are limited. After the doors swing open for public engagement with local organizations championing disability support, the film will roll promptly at 2 p.m., with a 98-minute runtime that's bound to evoke both tears and inspiration.
The post-screening panel is no small affair, featuring voices from across the spectrum of autism expertise. The lineup announced includes Dr. Todd Levine of Phoenix Children's Hospital, Bennett Slette, an articulate 16-year-old with autism, and Chandler's own Officer Erin O’Bryan from the Behavioral Health Unit. Fire Battalion Chief Blas Minor and Becky Kuiper of the Chandler Community Services Department will also be lending their insight, with the event's moderation and emceeing done by Erica Maxwell from the Chandler Human Relations Commission. Each panelist brings unique experience and knowledge to the table—a golden opportunity for a candid, important discussion about the autistic community and available local resources.
The screening and panel aim to deepen understanding and promote supportive spaces for all on the spectrum. For those interested in attending or learning more about the organizations participating with resource tables, full details are available on the "In A Different Key" website.
