Residents of Chicago are bracing for a week dominated by bone-chilling temperatures, with today—Washington's Birthday—seeing increasing clouds and highs struggling to reach 11 degrees, as noted by the National Weather Service. The real bite comes from the wind chill, which could plummet to -13 degrees with west winds around 15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph.
Tonight, the city can expect partly cloudy skies and perilously low temperatures around 0 degrees, but the wind chill could make it feel as bitter as -18 degrees Fox 32 Meteorologist Mike Caplan highlighted the severity of the conditions stating, "Wind chills could be -20 in our viewing area this morning and it won’t get much better during this Presidents’ Day," as reported by Fox 32 Chicago. Residents far north could experience lows near -10°, prompting the renewal of cold weather advisories.
The frosty trend is expected to continue through Tuesday with mostly sunny skies yet highs lingering near 13 degrees, and wind chills that could once again reach -17 degrees. Looking towards Wednesday, there’s a 30 percent chance of snow predominantly in the afternoon, coupled with mostly cloudy skies and a modest high near 15 degrees, the National Weather Service forecasts.
As the week progresses, Fox 32 Chicago suggests a gradual warming trend; "Thursday and Friday we will start to emerge from the deep freeze," Mike Caplan reported, and with highs creeping into the low to mid-20s, by Friday which will represent a slight reprieve from the gripping cold experienced at the beginning of the week. The weekend holds promise for a more substantial thaw with temperatures on Sunday potentially hitting a much more comfortable high near 36 degrees.
