Residents and postal workers in Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood are on edge following a daylight robbery on Monday. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department, a USPS mail carrier became the victim of an armed robbery perpetrated by two men. The offenders, described as African-American males around 5'08"-5'09" in height and donned dark clothing and face masks, approached the mail carrier and demanded their arrow key.
The incident, which unfolded on the 5700 block of South Calumet Ave. at approximately 1:20 P.M., escalated as the suspects implied they had a handgun and threatened to shoot the victim if not complied with. In the event the mail carrier was unharmed, the arrow key, which grants access to multiple mailboxes, was taken. Police report that the suspects fled the scene in a gray Nissan sedan.
The community has been urged to remain vigilant in light of recent events. The CPD advises locals to always be aware of their surroundings, report any suspicious activities immediately, and if confronted by an assailant, try to remain calm. "Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)," the police directive states.
The police also recommend to never chase after a fleeing assailant; instead, information should be provided to law enforcement authorities. "If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," the alert suggests, emphasizing collaboration with the police. In case of such an encounter, dialing 9-1-1 immediately and staying on scene when feasible is crucial. The CPD continues to investigate the crime and is seeking the public's assistance in finding those responsible for the theft.
