
Officers from the Chicago Police Department were involved in a shooting following a reported burglary on Sunday morning, February 2, the department confirmed. The incident, which happened at around 10:47 a.m. in the 1800 block of S. Central Park Ave., began when officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about a burglary in progress.
According to the preliminary report, officers gave chase on foot after encountering the suspect, leading to an exchange of gunfire that occurred at multiple sites close by. During the pursuit a weapon discharged, officers were shot at by the offender and they returned fire which subsequently struck the individual; officers administered first aid to the wounded suspect who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A weapon was discovered at the location of the shooting.
The officers involved were not injured but were taken to a hospital for observation as a precaution. In line with protocol, the officers who were part of the shooting have been re-assigned to administrative duties for at least 30 days. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), alongside the Chicago Police Department's Investigative Response Team, is currently handling the investigation into the use of force during the incident.
