Hyde Park residents have been warned to stay vigilant following a series of armed robberies reported in the area, with the Chicago Police Department issuing a community alert for the 2nd District. In the early hours of Thursday, and later that same evening, victims were confronted by three male suspects who brandished a firearm and demanded personal possessions at two separate locations, per the Chicago Police Department's statement.
The first incident occurred on the 5200 block of South Greenwood Ave. at around 12:05 A.M., swiftly followed by a second event at 10:25 P.M. on the 5400 block of South Ellis Ave; after taking what they had come for, the assailants fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle highlighting a pattern of criminal activity that left locals on edge and law enforcement on high alert. The suspects were all described as African-American males dressed in dark clothes and face masks.
In response to these robberies, the community is being advised to stay aware of their surroundings and to report any unusual activity without delay. Furthermore, should one find themselves face-to-face with a potential thief, remain calm and try to note any distinguishing features such as scars or a limp which could later help in apprehending the culprits, while also keeping in mind personal safety and neither resisting nor chasing after offenders.
Engaging witnesses and recording their contact information can be immensely helpful to the investigation, and in all instances, the police urge that 9-1-1 is called immediately; "If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," the Chicago Police Department suggests. Those with information can also submit tips anonymously, ensuring that even if witnesses or victims feel at risk, there is a way to aid the authorities.
