Chicago Police Release Body-Cam Footage of Fatal Shooting of Man in Mental Crisis in Little VillageSource: COPA

The release of body-worn camera footage by Chicago Police has brought to light the fatal shooting of Timothy Glaze, a man in an apparent mental health crisis, in a senior living residence in Little Village. The video, captured on Jan. 3, shows the intense moments during which Glaze, armed with a knife, was shot by officers responding to a domestic call.

According to The Chicago Sun-Times, when police arrived at the Albany Terrace Apartments, they were confronted by Glaze who brandished a knife and moved towards them. Less than two minutes after arriving on the sixth floor, the situation escalated to the point where, two officers discharged their weapons, striking Glaze multiple times as he fell to the hallway floor. Following the shooting, the officers are seen attempting to provide aid and are heard acknowledging Glaze's possession of a knife.

Timothy Glaze's family has since expressed their devastation and profound disbelief in a statement where they denounced the officers' actions. "We are heartbroken, devastated, and outraged by the tragic and unnecessary loss of our beloved Timothy Glaze," the family stated, a sentiment echoed in a report obtained by CBS News Chicago. They criticized the response for lacking empathy and de-escalation, given Glaze's state of mental distress.

Glaze's girlfriend, Charlotta Pritchett, regretted calling 911 due to the outcome, advising against the mention of a "knife," which may have heightened the police response. "I don't want to call 911 ever again in my life, because it took his life," Pritchett told CBS News Chicago. The family has challenged the necessity of using lethal force, especially given the existence of a mental health-specific unit in Chicago, though it is reported that they typically do not respond to calls involving weapons.
