After a tense standoff in DeKalb County yesterday morning, a man has been taken into custody following a SWAT team intervention at a local apartment complex. The situation unfolded at around 2 a.m. at 5103 Fairington Ridge Circle, as reported by Atlanta News First. The caller, a child confined to a bathroom for safety, alerted authorities that she was hiding from her mother's boyfriend, identified as 31-year-old Calvin Millbrooks.
Armed with six active warrants for domestic violence, having been barred by court order from contacting the victims, police say Millbrooks prevented the girl, her sibling, and their mother from leaving. The victims were eventually rescued by DeKalb County police after hours of negotiation, escorted out of a window unharmed.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the conflict reached its peak subsequent to the police's arrival at the apartment complex on Fairington Road, which prompted an interaction with an uncooperative Millbrooks. His arrest concluded an hours-long standoff that reflected a deeper, persisting struggle within the home.
An unnamed resident communicated to FOX 5 a pattern of police presence, noting, "I've seen police come back and forth every night - every night for the last three nights." His observation suggests a crescendo of law enforcement attention leading up to the standoff's resolution, resulting in Millbrooks emerging from the apartment under police custody.
While the immediate threat to the family involved and the surrounding community has been alleviated, much remains undisclosed by authorities in terms of specific charges in connection with the standoff. However, the public is urged to contribute any relevant information to assist with the continuing investigation, by contacting the DeKalb County Police Department. The nature of the charges against Millbrooks or the circumstances of his previous releases has not been clarified at this time.
