The City of Oakland is enhancing its surveillance operations by introducing additional safety cameras along the Hegenberger Avenue corridor in East Oakland. This corridor is a bustling business hub and the camera network's expansion has been timed strategically to align with the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend. This safety initiative is a collaborative effort that brings together the City Council, Oakland Police Department, and business communities from Districts five and six, as announced by the City of Oakland.

$150,000 was allocated to this purpose, and business recipients of the cameras were chosen based on a methodology that leverages data and insights from the Oakland Police Department. "Lights are on. Cameras are rolling. Now, it’s time for Oakland to take real action. That action starts with installing these long-overdue safety cameras along the Hegenberger corridor," Ken Houston, District 7 Councilmember, said in the City of Oakland announcement. The camera installation process seeks to quickly enhance the safety and improve the visibility of businesses and nearby areas, harnessing a data-informed strategy to optimize camera placements. This step is just one aspect of broader initiatives aimed at reducing crime through environmental design.

Former District 7 Councilmember Treva Reid shared her enthusiasm about the fruition of a budget allocation she secured, stating, per the City of Oakland, "Our community members, residents, and business owners have waited through two budget cycles for this program to be implemented. This expansion of the Citywide public safety program addresses the advocacy of community and business leaders for resources to combat gun violence, retail theft, and other socioeconomic challenges that disproportionately impact East Oakland."
