Valentine's Day may be all about love, but there wasn't a lot of it on the basketball court as the Utah Jazz felt the sting of defeat in their final game before the All-Star break, falling 120-116 to the Los Angeles Clippers in an overtime grudge match last Thursday. Norman Powell led the scoring brigade for the Clippers, hitting a season-high 41 points, while James Harden tacked on another 32 points, according to ABC4.
The Jazz, trailing with a record of 13-41, watched as the Clippers overturned a 20-point deficit to claim victory for the second time in three matchups, showing a resilience that perhaps the Jazz's young guard duo of George and Collier could learn from, despite their combined 17 assists the pair also struggled with turnovers, Collier losing the ball seven times and George four, in a somewhat jittery display of ball handling, as reported by Deseret News. Jazz coach Hardy, however, wasn't fazed by the turnover issue, saying, "I feel like it would be unfair of me to say, 'It's because they're young' because they were young yesterday and they played great and took care of the ball."
Despite the hiccup in turnovers the Jazz did manage to see Lauri Markkanen and rookie Kyle Filipowski both contribute 20 points, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise frustrating evening. But hope waned as Filipowski fouled out early in overtime, giving Powell the chance to widen the gap with successful free throws, as detailed by KSL Sports.
Ben Simmons’ debut with the Clippers seemed to flow smoothly, netting 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals, but it was Powell's consecutive baskets late in overtime that put the nail in the coffin, securing the Clippers’ lead at 119-114 with 59 seconds left on the clock, although the Jazz had moments of brilliance like forcing turnovers on consecutive possessions that turned into easy scoring opportunities, they couldn't maintain the momentum couldn't stage a final comeback.
