In the pre-dawn hours off the coast of Mission Bay, the United States Coast Guard made a significant interdiction when they encountered and subsequently detained 16 individuals aboard a small fishing vessel. As reported by the U.S. Coast Guard, the operation commenced after the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Active, operating near the region, spotted a 25-foot panga-style boat teeming with people about one mile south of their waypoint around 12 a.m. yesterday.
The cutter Active quickly sprang into action alongside a boat crew from U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations. With haste, boarding teams were deployed to investigate the suspect vessel, located approximately 15 miles offshore. Found aboard were 16 individuals; in a revelation by initial interviews, as stated by the Coast Guard, they all claimed Mexican nationality.
Focusing on the safety of lives and curtailing illicit activities at sea, the Coast Guard reaffirmed their dedication to such operations. The 16 people intercepted on the vessel were safely transferred into the protective custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.
