Last Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard detained three individuals off the coast near Mission Bay after being spotted on personal watercraft. The Coast Guard's official release identified the trio as aliens, with two claiming Vietnamese nationality and one asserting Mexican citizenship.
Approaching the mainland around 11:30 p.m., the Joint Harbor Operations Center noted the two watercraft moving northward towards Point Loma, attempting to navigate the aquatic thresholds that separate and connect nations. Immediately, Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco (MSST) and Station San Diego dispatched their respective small boat teams in response. Engaging the sea's restlessness, they were trailed with an urgency reserved for matters of border and sovereignty.
After the interception, all three individuals onboard the first vessel were apprehended. According to the Coast Guard's statement, the engagement resulted in the singular capture without incident, a testament to the precision with which these guardians of the coast wield their charge.
A second watercraft, likely startled by the sudden presence of authority on the open waters, evaded in a southerly direction. Finding refuge in the embrace of Mexico's maritime jurisdiction, where the Coast Guard's hand does not reach, it slipped away. The three detained individuals were later transferred to the custody of Imperial Beach Border Patrol.
