ADAC's annual Black History Month Essay Contest is now accepting submissions from students in Middle School and High School who are interested in exploring the intersections of their future job ambitions with the legacy of notable African Americans.
This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," is a deliberate choice, aimed at encouraging students to delve into how Black individuals have not only participated in, but have also shaped various professions throughout history. In a statement obtained by the Coconino County official website, participants are asked to select a historical or modern figure from Black History who excels in a profession they aspire to pursue. The council has provided a thoughtful list to guide students in their selection and a scoring rubric to aid teachers in cultivating potent essays from their pupils.
Middle School students, from grades 5 to 8, are prompted to envision their future career and pair it with a Black professional's narrative. To participate, they should write a reflective essay of at least 250 words based on a prompt provided by ADAC, as detailed on the Coconino County official website. High School students, in grades 9 through 12, are tasked with a more in-depth contemplation. They must research and compose an essay of no less than 500 words on how their chosen Black professional's journey and tribulations influenced their field and what lessons can be drawn from these experiences.
