In a grim conclusion to a harrowing case, Colorado City resident LaDell Jay Bistline, Jr. has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in a disturbing child sexual abuse ring. On October 2, 2024, after a trial that peeled back the layers of a conspiracy of abuse that endured for years, a jury convicted him on multiple counts including the receipt of child pornography, coercing minors into sexual activity, and transporting minors for criminal sexual activity. Bistline, 46, faced the finality of justice this past Wednesday when U.S. District Judge Susan M. Brnovich delivered the sentence, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona.
The case, encapsulating a dark narrative that spanned several states, saw at least 10 children fall victim to the exploitation network, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Beyond Bistline's acts, he was implicated in a larger conspiracy alongside Samuel Rappylee Bateman, the self-proclaimed leader of a religious sect, and ten of Bateman's followers, who had pleaded guilty to related charges. Among the most unsettling aspects of Bistline’s crimes, he delivered two of his daughters, then aged nine and 11, to Bateman to be abused as child "brides."
During the trial, evidence was presented that detailed how Bistline, among others, transported these innocent victims across state lines to places like Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, effectively enabling the ongoing abuse. Some of Bistline’s offenses were brazen enough to include his participation in group sexual activities with children, and on one occasion he even observed such an act via a video livestream.
The investigation into this chilling operation was spearheaded by the Phoenix Field Office of the FBI, culminating in a robust prosecution by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Phoenix. As the case wraps up, there remains a deep debt of gratitude towards the various agencies involved, including the Arizona Department of Child Safety for rescuing and protecting the children, the Colorado City Police Department, the Iron County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and especially the St. George Resident Agency of the FBI’s Salt Lake City Field Office for their indispensable assistance in bringing these perpetrators to justice.
