The Colorado Springs Fire Department has ushered in a groundbreaking resource for individuals grappling with opioid dependency with the introduction of their Targeted Opioid Response and Medication Assisted Treatment (TOR-MAT) team. As of Monday, the program hailed as a pioneer within the State of Colorado, embarked on its mission to offer critical assistance on the path to recovery from opioid addiction, according to the City of Colorado Springs.
The TOR-MAT combines the expertise of a civilian paramedic with a behavioral health navigator. This duo seeks to intervene and offer mediation to those facing the challenges of opiate addiction. The impetus for their response can arise from a variety of sources, including follow-ups from 911 Opioid Overdose calls and community referrals when space permits. Their strategy is to engage with patients within 72 hours to evaluate withdrawal symptoms and initiate voluntary treatment with buprenorphine strips, an alternative to risk-laden opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.
Buprenorphine presents a safer option, designed to suppress withdrawal signs and cut down cravings without inducing a sense of euphoria or lethargy. The overarching ambition of the TOR-MAT scheme is to construct a bridge across the chasm of services that typically widens in the aftermath of an overdose or within the throes of addiction. Their efforts are directed toward disseminating medication-assisted treatment and channeling individuals to community resources that can offer support.
Moreover, the program bolsters continuous recovery through its facilitation of referrals to local clinics specializing in buprenorphine-based treatments and connections to peer and recovery programs. When deemed appropriate, the TOR-MAT is poised to supply Narcan kits while simultaneously educating patients, as well as their family and friends on the kit utilization.
Fire Chief Randy Royal spoke to the value of the addition, noting, "Adding this new team will not only help a vulnerable population in our community who often don’t get the right resources for their needs but will help better the lives of the people we humbly serve every day." Royal emphasizes the department's commitment to innovation, as per the City of Colorado Springs.
